Safeguarding American Democracy

In the final days of the Obama administration, I tried to ensure that information about Russian interference in our elections was collected and shared with the Congress.  I then worked with members of Congress to stop an early effort by Trump to lift sanctions on Russia.  We don’t yet know exactly what happened in the 2016 election, but we know what Russia tried to do.  This should not be a partisan issue.  Yet neither the administration nor the Congress has taken a single step to strengthen our defenses for the next time a foreign adversary, whether Russia, China or someone else, tries to hijack our democracy.  If elected, I will:

  • Defend the independence of the Justice Department investigation looking at what happened in the 2016 election.

  • Support legislation to strengthen the security of our voting systems, and other critical infrastructure.

  • Fight to pass a law that I lobbied for as a State Department official -- to prevent corrupt foreign actors from setting up anonymously owned businesses in the US.

  • Press tech companies to be more transparent about political advertising and to crack down on foreign “bots” spreading propaganda -- and support legislation if they refuse
